EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Flintlock musket for the East India Company, dating back to 1779. Created by the British School in the 18th century, this historical artifact is currently housed at the National Army Museum in London. The intricate details of this musket are truly remarkable; both the lock and barrel proudly display the bale mark of the United East India Company, along with the date and maker's name - Wilson. Originally designed as a simplified pattern with a . 39 inch barrel, these muskets were urgently acquired by the British Army in 1793 during the Wars of French Revolution. Subsequently known as India Pattern Muskets, they were produced by the Board of Ordnance from 1797 onwards. Notably, this particular example bears an additional marking: Lieutenant-Colonel Edward Windus' crowned W insignia - symbolizing his role as Inspector of Small-arms for the company. Lieutenant-Colonel Edward Windus was an esteemed officer who had previously served with distinction in various regiments before being disbanded in 1763. His involvement further adds to both historical significance and value of this exceptional piece. Preserved through time, this photograph allows us to appreciate not only its exquisite craftsmanship but also serves as a testament to Britain's colonial past and military prowess during that era.
