EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the title page from the libretto of Handel's opera Rinaldo, as composed by Giacomo Rossi in 1717. The print, created by an anonymous English School artist from the 18th century, measures approximately 18 cm in height and is currently housed in the Gerald Coke Handel Collection at the Foundling Museum in London. The title page provides a glimpse into the grandeur of this renowned opera production. It features elaborate typography and decorative elements that exude elegance and sophistication. The libretto was printed for J. Tonson and dedicated to Her Most Sacred Majesty, The Queen. Aaron Hill played a significant role in bringing this Italian opera to English-speaking audiences. He translated the original text from Italian to English and provided an accompanying scenario, which he explains further in his preface included within this volume. Giacomo Rossi himself also contributes to this remarkable work with a letter addressed to readers written entirely in Italian on page x. Additionally, pages xi-xii contain an English description of the plot for those who may be unfamiliar with its narrative. Notably, during its revival performance in 1717, several changes were made to Rinaldo's score including altering Argante's role from bass to alto and omitting Eustazio altogether. This print offers viewers a window into both historical significance and artistic brilliance captured within one extraordinary piece of musical history.
