Arion on a Sea Horse, 1855. Creator: William Adolphe Bouguereau (French, 1825-1905)
Arion on a Sea Horse, 1855. These paintings are from a series of eight works that Anatole Bartholoni commissioned the 29-year-old Bouguereau to create for his Paris home, decorated in the fashionable Pompeian-revival style. The paintings emulate ancient Roman designs. Crisp, cut-out forms are set against a gold background painted in imitation of mosaic. Arion was an ancient Greek poet who escaped death by riding away on the back of a sea creature who had been attracted by the poets song. In the companion picture, a bacchante--a female worshipper of the wine god Bacchus--rides a panther, the gods symbolic animal. These works were shown at the 1857 Paris Salon exhibition

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases William Adolphe Bouguereau's masterpiece, "Arion on a Sea Horse" created in 1855. Commissioned by Anatole Bartholoni for his Paris home, these paintings were part of a series of eight works that adorned the residence in the fashionable Pompeian-revival style. Inspired by ancient Roman designs, Bouguereau skillfully portrays Arion, an ancient Greek poet who escaped death by riding away on the back of a sea creature enchanted by his melodious song. The artist's meticulous attention to detail is evident in this piece, with crisp and cut-out forms set against a golden background imitating mosaic artistry. The painting transports viewers to another era, evoking the grandeur and elegance of classical antiquity. In addition to "Arion on a Sea Horse" this collection includes another remarkable work featuring a bacchante—a female worshipper of Bacchus—riding atop a panther, symbolizing the wine god himself. These extraordinary pieces were exhibited at the renowned 1857 Paris Salon exhibition. Preserved within The Cleveland Museum of Art, this oil-on-fabric painting represents Bouguereau's exceptional talent and mastery as one of France's most celebrated artists during the 19th century. This Heritage Art print allows us to appreciate and admire Bouguereau's artistic brilliance while capturing the essence and beauty of this timeless creation.
