EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Charlotte Buff, a remarkable woman whose life left an indelible mark on German literature and history. Created in 1933 by an unknown artist, the portrait captures the essence of Charlotte Buff (1753-1828), who became renowned for her connection to the famous poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Goethe fell deeply in love with Charlotte, but she courageously rejected his advances. This rejection inspired Goethe to create the character of Lotte in his iconic novel "The Sorrows of Young Werther". The image is based on a miniature from 1785 and was featured in "Gestalten Der Weltgeschichte" a book containing cigarette-card portrait miniatures that depict influential figures from world history over four centuries. Despite declining Goethe's proposal, Charlotte went on to marry Johann Christian Kestner and together they had twelve children. Her resilience and strength are evident as she confidently gazes at the viewer with her oval-shaped face framed by her elegant hairstyle. This photograph offers us a glimpse into both the beauty of eighteenth-century Germany and the intriguing story behind one woman's impact on literature. It serves as a testament to Charlotte Buff's significant role in shaping not only Goethe's work but also her own legacy as a wife, mother, and symbol of independence during this pivotal period in history.
