Edward IV of England and Lady Elizabeth Grey - A Love Story from the 15th Century
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this lithograph print, we are transported back to the 15th century, a time of political turmoil and forbidden love. King Edward IV, known for his charm and prowess as a ruler, finds himself on a hunting excursion in the Forest of Wychwood. Little did he know that fate had something extraordinary in store for him. During his visit to Grafton, the residence of the Duchess of Bedford and her husband Lord Rivers, Edward encounters Lady Elizabeth Grey. Widowed by Sir John Grey, a Lancastrian nobleman who fought against Edward's Yorkist faction during the Wars of the Roses, Lady Elizabeth captures Edward's heart with her beauty and grace. Their meeting is depicted here as they kneel before each other amidst lush greenery. The colors bring life to their medieval attire - Edward dressed in regal hunting garb while Elizabeth dons an elegant gown befitting her status. This clandestine encounter would lead to their secret marriage later on. Their union became one of history's most enduring love stories despite its controversial beginnings. The artist James William Edmund Doyle masterfully captures this momentous event from both centuries - combining historical accuracy with romanticism. This lithograph serves as a visual reminder that even amidst war and political strife, love has always found its way into our hearts throughout history.
