The Queen crossing the Maine, at Langfort, Bavaria, 1845. Creator: Unknown
The Queen crossing the Maine, at Langfort, Bavaria, 1845. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert travel by boat during a royal visit to Germany. At Langfort, where the road again crosses the Maine, there is no bridge, but a ferry, overlooked by the Castle of Count Liebenstein, once a nunnery. The view from and around this Castle is a very pretty specimen of river scenery. Here a special ferry-boat had been prepared for her Majestys use, decorated with flags and flowers, and covered over from the air by a pavilion of tasteful construction. From Langfort to Hesseldach and Hesselthal, the road runs more or less within sight of the Main, of which some very beautiful views are obtained.... From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

The Queen's Majestic Voyage - A Royal Visit to Germany in 1845
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a momentous occasion during the reign of Queen Victoria. In the year 1845, Her Majesty and Prince Albert embarked on an enchanting boat journey across the Maine River at Langfort, Bavaria. The absence of a bridge led them to board a specially adorned ferry-boat, meticulously decorated with flags and flowers, creating an atmosphere befitting their royal presence. The photograph showcases the picturesque scenery surrounding this historic crossing point. Towering above is the Castle of Count Liebenstein, once a nunnery but now overlooking this idyllic river scene. From here, one can catch glimpses of breathtaking views along the Main as it winds its way through Bavaria. Published in "Illustrated London News" in 1845, this engraving brings to life an era when newspapers were instrumental in documenting significant events for public consumption. Queen Victoria's visit to Germany not only strengthened diplomatic ties but also showcased her role as Empress of India and sovereign over Great Britain and Ireland. As we gaze upon this remarkable image captured by an unknown creator from that time period, we are transported back to witness history unfolding before our eyes. This extraordinary snapshot serves as a testament to Queen Victoria's enduring legacy as one of Britain's most influential monarchs while offering us a glimpse into the beauty and grandeur of nineteenth-century river transport.
