Virgin and Child, late 1430s. Creator: Rossello di Jacopo Franchi (Italian, c. 1376-1457)

Virgin and Child, late 1430s. In his left hand the Christ Child holds a swallow. Swallows were thought to hibernate during winter in nests of mud. Their re-emergence in spring symbolized the Resurrection of Christ. This painting was probably the central panel of an altarpiece. After the altarpiece was broken up, the work was cut into its present octagonal shape

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artwork of Rossello di Jacopo Franchi, an Italian artist from the late 15th century. Titled "Virgin and Child" this painting depicts a tender moment between the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus. What makes this piece truly unique is the inclusion of a swallow in Christ's left hand. During that time, swallows were believed to hibernate in mud nests during winter, symbolizing death or dormancy. Their return in spring was seen as a powerful metaphor for the Resurrection of Christ. This detail adds depth and symbolism to an already remarkable composition. Originally part of an altarpiece, this central panel has been separated from its original context over time. The work has been carefully cut into its present octagonal shape, highlighting both its artistic value and historical significance. Painted using tempera on wood, Rossello di Jacopo Franchi's skillful technique brings life to each brushstroke. The delicate features of Mary and Jesus radiate with love and tenderness, inviting viewers into their sacred bond. Now housed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this stunning piece continues to captivate audiences with its beauty and spiritual resonance. Through this print by Heritage Art/Heritage Images, art enthusiasts can appreciate not only the craftsmanship but also the rich symbolism embedded within this masterpiece from 15th-century Florence, Italy.
