Transporter crane JLP01_10_00447
WESTWAY FLYOVER, A40, KENSINGTON AND CHELSEA, GREATER LONDON. The transporter crane lowering a deck unit of the Westway Flyover into place as it spans Great Western Road.
The transporter crane was specially designed and built by Laings Plant Department. The four-legged gantry made 400 trips along the carriageway of Section 5, lifting the individual deck units from the Harrow Road end, transporting them the length of the highway and lowering them into position. The deck units for Section 5 weigh up to 130 tonnes and are more than 28 metres wide, carrying all six lanes of the carriageway. The units are supported on a temporary structure of steel beams weighing 160 tons until each span is complete, stressed together and self-supporting. This photograph was taken at grid reference TQ

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the impressive sight of a transporter crane, known as JLP01_10_00447, in action on the Westway Flyover in Kensington and Chelsea, Greater London. The transporter crane, meticulously designed and constructed by Laings Plant Department, is seen here lowering a massive deck unit into place as it spans Great Western Road. The four-legged gantry of this remarkable piece of machinery made an astonishing 400 trips along Section 5 of the carriageway. Its purpose was to lift individual deck units from one end near Harrow Road, transport them the entire length of the highway, and carefully lower them into position. These deck units are no ordinary load - weighing up to 130 tonnes and measuring over 28 meters wide, they bear the weight of all six lanes on this bustling roadway. To ensure stability during construction, these colossal units are temporarily supported by steel beams weighing a staggering 160 tons until each span is complete. Once stressed together and self-supporting, they become an integral part of this vital transportation infrastructure. Taken at grid reference TQ2491181834 during the flyover's construction in the swinging sixties era, this photograph showcases not only incredible engineering feats but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity. It reminds us that progress often requires immense effort behind-the-scenes to create structures that shape our modern world.
