The Market Hall was built in 1887, designed to replace an earlier hall, and demolished in 1986. It was positioned on Castle Square, which is where temporary market stalls are now held. The image shows the front elevation, a two and a half storey building with a semi-circular window in the central bay creating the extra height. The window is topped with a pediment which has an obelisk-shaped pinnacle at the apex and finials on either side. The words ERECTED AD 1887 are in the pediment

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur of the Market Hall in Castle Square, Ludlow, Shropshire. Built in 1887 as a replacement for its predecessor, this architectural gem stood proudly until its unfortunate demolition in 1986. The image showcases the front elevation of the hall, a magnificent two and a half storey structure that exudes Victorian charm. The focal point of this impressive building is undoubtedly the semi-circular window adorning the central bay. This unique feature adds an element of height and elegance to an already striking facade. Crowned with a pediment, adorned with intricate details and flanked by finials on either side, it truly stands out as a testament to exquisite craftsmanship. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, our eyes are drawn to the words "ERECTED AD 1887" etched into the pediment. These simple yet powerful words serve as a reminder of both history and progress. In contrast to its historic surroundings, we see a car park stretching out before us - evidence of modernity encroaching upon tradition. It serves as a poignant reminder that while some structures may be lost over time, their memories endure through photographs like these. Ursula Clark's masterful composition not only captures architectural beauty but also tells stories of change and preservation. As we delve into this image from Historic England's collection, we are transported back to an era where market halls were bustling centers of commerce and community life – forever preserved within these frames.
