EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph print transports us back to the grandeur and opulence of a Christmas feast during the reign of Henry VI, in the 15th century. The arrival of the centerpiece, a magnificent peacock pie, is heralded by a procession of servers and entertainers, as they make their way through a sprawling baronial hall. On the left, a jester and a varlet playfully chase off a dog, clearing the way for the steward to enter. Behind him, the panterer, two trumpeters, and the carver follow closely, the carver proudly holding aloft the intricately designed peacock pie. The master cook trails behind, his face obscured by the large flagon he carries. The fireplace, piled high with Yule logs, takes center stage in the hall, reminiscent of Saxon times. The long tables, laden with an abundance of food and drink, are set for a lavish meal. The festive atmosphere is palpable, as the guests eagerly await the arrival of the main course. This photograph, taken on November 24, 1930, offers a glimpse into the rich history of Christmas feasting during the Middle Ages. The customs and traditions depicted in this image have been passed down through generations, and continue to inspire our modern-day celebrations of the holiday season.
