In the early days of the First World War, during the naval action off Heligoland in August 1914, a brave British submarine crew came to the rescue of a stranded boats crew in this historic moment captured by renowned photographer G.H. Davis. The naval action, also known as the Heligoland Bight raid, was a significant engagement between the British Royal Navy and the German High Seas Fleet. In the chaos of the battle, a boats crew found themselves in peril, their vessel damaged and unable to continue. As the sun began to set, hope seemed to fade for the stranded sailors. But the quick thinking and courage of the British submarine crew, aboard the E4, came to their rescue. The submarine, with the help of a large sphere and ladder, maneuvered alongside the stranded boat, allowing the sailors to make their way to safety.
