1751 1830 Comte Pair Victor

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures Jean Victor, Comte Colchen (1751-1830), a prominent French statesman and peer of France during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Colchen was born into a noble family in Lorraine and entered public service under the monarchy of Louis XVI. He rose through the ranks of the French administrative system, serving as intendant of various provinces and eventually becoming a pair de France, a title granted to the highest-ranking members of the French nobility. During the French Revolution, Colchen remained loyal to the monarchy and played a key role in negotiating with revolutionary leaders. He was a member of the Assembly of Notables, a body of nobles and clergy convened by King Louis XVI in 1787 to address the financial crisis facing the monarchy. Colchen's diplomatic skills were instrumental in securing concessions from the revolutionaries, including the preservation of the nobility and the Church. Despite his efforts to maintain the old order, Colchen eventually had to flee France during the Reign of Terror. He spent the remainder of his life in exile, living in Switzerland and Russia. This portrait, likely taken during his time in Russia, shows Colchen in the prime of his life, with a serious expression and impeccably dressed in the fashion of the day. The artist has skillfully captured the sense of dignity and authority that marked Colchen's career as a statesman and peer of France.
