A History Of The Birds Of New Zealand Buller Jg Keulemans John Gerrard Keulemans Keulemans Nestor Parrot Psittaciformes Sauropsid Sauropsida Watercolor Kaka New Zealand Parrot
EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor painting depicts two varieties of the Kaka, Nestor meridionalis, a native parrot species endemic to New Zealand. The Kaka is a member of the Strigopidae family, also known as the New Zealand parrots, and is characterized by its distinctive curved beak and bright, iridescent feathers. The Kaka on the left is identified as the North Island Kaka, which is distinguished by its red beak and legs, and a green plumage with blue-green iridescence on its wings and tail. The Kaka on the right is the South Island Kaka, which has a yellow beak and legs, and a predominantly olive-green plumage with blue-green iridescence on its wings and tail. This artwork was created by the renowned Dutch natural history illustrator, JG Keulemans, for Sir Walter Lawry Buller's seminal work, "A History of the Birds of New Zealand," published in 1888. Keulemans' meticulous attention to detail and mastery of watercolor techniques are evident in this exquisite illustration. The Kaka was once abundant throughout New Zealand, but its population was decimated by habitat loss and predation by introduced species such as rats, stoats, and ferrets. Conservation efforts have helped to stabilize the population, and the Kaka is now classified as "Nationally Vulnerable" in New Zealand's Threat Classification System. This beautiful painting serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving New Zealand's unique avian biodiversity for future generations to enjoy.
