The book was written by two Victorian sisters, Mary Kirby (1817-1893) and Elizabeth Kirby (1823-1873), who were renowned for their contributions to the field of natural history. The Lesser Bird-of-Paradise is a small, exotic bird native to the tropical forests of New Guinea.
