EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured steel engraving depicts the English laurel tree, Prunus laurocerasus, also known as Cherry laurel or Laurier-cerise. The illustration is taken from Pierre Oscar Reveil's comprehensive work, "La Regne Vegetal: Flore Medicale," published by A. Dupuis, Fr. Gerard, and Francois Herincqs in Paris between 1864 and 1871. The illustration was created by the skilled botanical artist, Edouard Maubert, and expertly rendered in steel engraving by Debray. The English laurel tree is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to southern Europe, western Asia, and northwestern Africa. It is characterized by its glossy, dark green leaves that resemble those of the bay laurel, giving it the common name "English laurel." The tree bears small, white to pinkish flowers in late spring, followed by dark purple or black cherries in late summer. The English laurel tree has a long history of use in horticulture and medicine. Its leaves were used in ancient Greece and Rome as a symbol of victory and to crown poets and athletes. In traditional medicine, the tree's leaves were used to treat various ailments, including gastrointestinal issues, respiratory problems, and as a nerve tonic. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving is a testament to the artistry and scientific rigor of botanical illustration during the 19th century. It offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the beauty and diversity of the natural world, while also highlighting the importance of accurate documentation and recording of plant species for medicinal and horticultural purposes.
