EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate print showcases the European Seabass, scientifically known as Dicentrarchus labrax, also referred to as Perca labrax or simply Bass. The European Seabass is a highly prized marine fish native to the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. This illustration is taken from Edward Donovan's Natural History of British Fishes, published between 1802 and 1808 by Donovan and Rivington in London. Donovan's Natural History of British Fishes is considered a seminal work in the field of ichthyology, or the study of fish. The meticulously detailed and beautifully executed engravings, such as this one, were produced using the copperplate printing technique, which involved creating an engraving on a copper plate and then inking and printing it onto paper. The European Seabass in this print is depicted in a lifelike and detailed manner, with its elongated body, large dorsal and anal fins, and distinctive lateral line running along its sides. The fish is shown with its mouth open, revealing its sharp, pointed teeth. The intricate scales, gills, and fins are also clearly visible. The European Seabass is a popular game fish and is highly valued for its delicious flavor and firm, white flesh. It can be found in both the Atlantic and Mediterranean, and is commonly caught by recreational and commercial fishermen. The fish is also an important species in marine ecosystems, playing a role in the food chain and serving as a prey species for larger predators. This print not only serves as a beautiful and accurate record of the European Seabass, but also as a testament to the skill and artistry of the natural history illustrators and printers of the time.
