EDITORS COMMENTS
Pararistolochia goldieana, also known as Aristolochia goldieana, is a rare and vulnerable plant species belonging to the Aristolochiaceae family. This stunning handcoloured lithograph is an exquisite example of the beauty and intricacy of this unique plant. The illustration is taken from the horticultural masterpiece, "Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l'Europe" (Flowers of the Gardens and Hothouses of Europe), published by Louis van Houtte and Charles Lemaires in Ghent, Belgium between 1867 and 1868. Pararistolochia goldieana is native to the tropical rainforests of Central America and is characterized by its distinctive, pendulous, and highly fragrant flowers. The plant's flowers are shaped like a bell, with a hooded lip that resembles a bat or a bird, and are often pollinated by bees and other long-tongued insects. The plant's leaves are large, glossy, and heart-shaped, and its stems are covered in small, white hairs. Despite its striking appearance, Pararistolochia goldieana is a vulnerable species, with populations declining due to habitat loss and fragmentation. The plant is currently listed as "Vulnerable" on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, making it an important species for conservation efforts. This beautiful illustration serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the world's rare and endangered plant species for future generations to enjoy.
