The Royal Surrey Theatre

The Surrey Theatre, London began life in 1782 as the Royal Circus and Equestrian Philharmonic Academy, one of the many circuses that provided entertainment of both horsemanship and drama (hippodrama). It stood in Blackfriars Road, near the junction with Westminster Bridge Road, just south of the River Thames in what is now the London Borough of Southwark. After a fire, a new theatre was built, but it finally closed in 1924 and the building was demolished in 1934. Date: 1875

EDITORS COMMENTS
"This photograph, taken in 1875, showcases the grandeur of The Royal Surrey Theatre, located in Blackfriars Road, London. Originally established in 1782 as the Royal Circus and Equestrian Philharmonic Academy, this remarkable venue was one of many circuses in London that offered an intoxicating blend of horsemanship and drama, a unique form of entertainment known as hippodrama. The theatre stood near the junction of Westminster Bridge Road, just south of the River Thames in the London Borough of Southwark. Despite the passage of time, the theatre underwent a transformation after a devastating fire. A new building was erected, but its glory days eventually came to an end in 1924. Regrettably, the historic structure was demolished in 1934, leaving behind only memories and this evocative image. The Royal Surrey Theatre, a testament to the rich history of London's theatrical past, continues to captivate us with its elegance and allure." Mary Evans Picture Library / Mary Evans Prints Online holds the copyright to this photograph, which is a valuable addition to any collection showcasing the history of London's theatrical landscape.
