Wailing Wall, Jerusalem
Depiction of Jews at the Wailing Wall (also known as the Western Wall, Kotel, Buraq Wall). This sacred site consists of an ancient limestone wall located in Jerusalem which makes up a small part of a much longer ancient retaining wall, known in its entirety as the Western Wall. Located in the Old City, it is a place of prayer and pilgrimage which is sacred to Jewish people. It is the location of the remains of the Second Temple of Jerusalem which was destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE. It is known as the Wailing Wall due to the practice of Jewish people weeping at this site over the destruction of the temples. Date: 1878
