EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image depicts the final moments of Friedrich I Barbarossa, Holy Roman Emperor and leader of the Third Crusade, as he meets his untimely end in the waters of the Calycadnus (now known as the Goksu) River in Cilicia, on June 10, 1190. The Third Crusade, launched in response to the capture of Jerusalem by Saladin in 1187, had seen the allied Christian forces make slow progress against the formidable Muslim army. As they approached the fortified city of Iconium (now Konya) in present-day Turkey, Friedrich I's army was ambushed by a smaller but well-positioned enemy force. The emperor, who had been riding at the front of his troops, was swept away by the current as he attempted to cross the Calycadnus River during a heavy rainstorm. His body was later recovered and brought back to Germany for burial. The death of Friedrich I was a significant turning point in the Crusades, as it marked the end of the imperial involvement in the campaign and left the remaining European forces without a strong leader. Despite this setback, the Crusade continued under the leadership of other European rulers, including King Richard I of England and Philip II of France. This print, created in the late 19th or early 20th century, captures the dramatic scene of Friedrich I's final moments, with his horse and knights in disarray as the emperor is swallowed by the river. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices and challenges faced by the Crusaders during their quest to reclaim the Holy Land.
