EDITORS COMMENTS
Amidst the chaos and destruction of the First World War, a unique bond was formed between man and man's best friend. In this poignant and humorous sequential sketch from 1918, titled "A Soldier's Dog," we witness the heartwarming tale of war-time French dogs who had lost their homes and had attached themselves to new owners. The scene opens with a forlorn French bulldog sitting by the side of the road, his once proud military uniform now tattered and torn. He gazes longingly at the passing soldiers, each one accompanied by a loyal canine companion. The dog's sadness turns to curiosity as he watches a group of soldiers huddled around a map, planning their next move. Suddenly, a stray bullet whistles through the air, causing the soldiers to scatter in all directions. In the ensuing chaos, the French bulldog seizes the opportunity to join the group, scampering after the nearest soldier. The soldier, initially startled, soon warms to the dog's company and pats him on the head. The sketch continues to depict various scenes of soldiers and their newfound canine companions, each one more endearing than the last. In one panel, a soldier is seen sharing his rations with a hungry stray, while in another, a dog helps to pull a wounded soldier to safety. As the war rages on, these dogs become more than just companions to the soldiers. They offer comfort, companionship, and a sense of normalcy in the midst of the horrors of war. And as the sketch comes to a close, we see the French bulldog proudly wearing a new military uniform, marching alongside his soldier companion, a testament to the unbreakable bond between man and dog.
