EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the grim reality of the Soviet Union's air defense during the early stages of World War II. The image features a Tupolev SB-2 medium bomber, a standard Soviet aircraft of the time, standing ready on a desolate airfield. The SB-2, also known as the "Moonlight" or "Tu-2," was a twin-engine, twin-boom bomber that saw extensive service with the Soviet Air Force from 1938 to 1950. As the German invasion of the Soviet Union began in June 1941, the Soviet Air Force found itself ill-prepared to face the advanced aircraft and tactics of the Luftwaffe. The SB-2, while outdated by Western standards, was a crucial component of the Soviet air fleet. With a maximum speed of 340 km/h and a range of 1,200 km, it could deliver bombs deep into enemy territory. Despite its limitations, the SB-2 proved to be a formidable adversary. Soviet pilots flew numerous successful missions against German targets, inflicting significant damage on the invading forces. The aircraft's sturdy design and ability to fly at low altitudes made it a difficult target for German anti-aircraft defenses. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the Soviet people during the early days of the war. The SB-2, though outdated, played a vital role in the defense of the Soviet Union and the eventual victory against the Axis powers. The image also highlights the determination and resilience of the Soviet Air Force in the face of overwhelming odds.
