EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "William Henry Lord Leigh, Lord-lieutenant of Warwickshire (1824-1905)" William Henry Lord Leigh (1824-1905) is depicted in this elegant and formal portrait, proudly wearing the insignia of his esteemed position as Lord-lieutenant of Warwickshire. Lord-lieutenants were appointed by the monarch to represent the Crown in each county, overseeing the administration of local affairs and maintaining order. Born on November 16, 1824, Lord Leigh was the eldest son of the 2nd Earl of Crickhowell and Lady Elizabeth Somerset. He succeeded to the title of Lord Leigh in 1856 upon the death of his father. Lord Leigh's tenure as Lord-lieutenant of Warwickshire began in 1889 and lasted until his retirement in 1903. During his time as Lord-lieutenant, Lord Leigh played a significant role in various civic and ceremonial events. He presided over the Warwickshire County Show, the Warwickshire Agricultural Society, and the Warwickshire Yeomanry Cavalry. He also attended royal visits to the county, including the visit of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1897. Lord Leigh was a prominent figure in Warwickshire society and was known for his charitable work. He was a generous benefactor to local schools, hospitals, and other institutions. In 1893, he established the Leigh Trust, which provided financial assistance to deserving students in the county. This photograph, taken in the late 19th century, captures Lord Leigh in the prime of his life, dressed in the full regalia of his office. The portrait serves as a reminder of the important role Lord-lieutenants played in the administration and social fabric of English counties during this period. Lord Leigh passed away on February 2, 1905, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Warwickshire. His portrait remains an enduring testament to his dedication and service to the county and its people.
