EDITORS COMMENTS
Wingfield House Red Cross Hospital: A Haven of Healing During World War I This evocative photograph captures the serene facade of Wingfield House, a country home that served as a military hospital during the First World War. The seat of Sir Vincent and Lady Caillard, this elegant residence had been converted into a medical facility since October 1914, initially accommodating seventeen patients and expanding to care for forty. Lady Caillard, pictured left, assumed the role of commandant, demonstrating her unwavering dedication to the welfare of the wounded soldiers. Her only daughter provided invaluable assistance, as they both oversaw the care of over four hundred patients who passed through the hospital between its opening and the time this image was published in The Tatler in January 1918. Sir Vincent Caillard, a former Sapper and a director of Vickers Ltd., stood proudly behind the scenes, providing support and resources for the hospital's operation.
