For the first time in Cardiff vehicles used both sides of the road to travel in the same

For the first time in Cardiff vehicles used both sides of the road to travel in the same direction. It happened when the citys big " one-way traffic switch" started. Here cars from the Friary are entering the stream of traffic in Queen Street, Cardiff. At the same time they must avoid trolley-buses, which are the only vehicles allowed to travel in the opposite direction. Pedestrians on the zebra crossing have to watch for cars from the Friary cutting into the traffic lane on both sides of the small island. Queen Street, Cardiff, Wales. 3rd June 1952

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in Cardiff's transportation history. It showcases the first-ever implementation of a one-way traffic system in the city, where vehicles were allowed to travel on both sides of the road in the same direction. The image depicts cars from the Friary seamlessly merging into the stream of traffic on Queen Street, while carefully navigating around trolley-buses that were permitted to move in the opposite direction. The scene is bustling with activity as pedestrians patiently wait at a zebra crossing, attentively watching for any cars from the Friary that might cut into their path. The small island at the center becomes an essential refuge for those traversing this newly transformed street. Taken on June 3rd, 1952, this photograph offers us a glimpse into life during mid-20th century Wales. It portrays not only an important milestone in urban planning but also reflects how society adapted to these changes. The juxtaposition between traditional modes of transport and emerging modernity is evident here. Preserved by Western Mail Archive and now available through Memory Lane Prints, this image serves as a testament to Cardiff's progressive spirit and its willingness to embrace innovative solutions for its growing population.
