The last big German supply ship left in the Aegean Sea
was recently sent to the bottom after a brilliant attack
by American Mitchells and RAF torpedo-carrying
Beaufighters, The Australian crew of a Baltimore aircraft
on shipping reconnaissance sighted a German convoy south of Folegandros making course for Crete.
Mitchells and Beaufighters were got ready. The German merchant ship of 5, 000 tons carrying supplies for the enemy garrisons in Crete was escorted by two destroyers, one a flak ship, and an air cover of Junker JU 88s, ME 109s and Arados.
The Mitchell took off first and soon sighted the convoy. They attacked with cannon fire.
The JUs and MEs came streaming down on their tails and the Mitchells turned away, drawing air cover after them.
Meanwhile RAF Beaufighters arrived, Anti-Flak Beaufighters attacked the escorting
destroyers and simultaneously the torpedo-carrying
Beaufighters went in low and launched their " tin fish"
Two observers, as their pilots cleared the merchantman, saw a torpedo find its mark, and watched the bursting mushroom of the explosion and saw the ship begin to turn. Other pilots following actually saw a great gash in the ships side.
Other torpedo-carrying Beaufighters went for the destroyers and got a torpedo hit on one whlle the second was slightly damaged*

Bravery and Precision - The Heroic Attack on the Last German Supply Ship in the Aegean Sea
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print captured by an Official photographer from Memory Lane Prints, we witness a moment of triumph during World War II. It depicts the aftermath of a brilliant attack on the last big German supply ship in the Aegean Sea. The image showcases RAF Beaufighters soaring above the crippled merchant vessel, with an escort destroyer visible in the background. The scene unfolds after American Mitchells and RAF torpedo-carrying Beaufighters executed a daring assault on a German convoy en route to Crete. Protected by Junker JU 88s, ME 109s, and Arados, this formidable enemy fleet was determined to deliver crucial supplies to their garrisons. However, fate had other plans. As Mitchell bombers unleashed cannon fire upon their targets, brave pilots skillfully evaded retaliatory attacks from enemy planes. Simultaneously, Anti-Flak Beaufighters engaged with escort destroyers while torpedo-carrying counterparts launched their deadly "tin fish". Witnesses observed torpedoes striking both the merchant ship and one of its escorts. This photograph immortalizes not only an extraordinary display of courage but also highlights international cooperation between Australian crews and Allied forces. It serves as a testament to those who risked everything for freedom during that fateful day in April 1944. With each passing year, images like these remind us of our shared history and honor those who fought valiantly against tyranny. This print is more than just a snapshot; it represents resilience and sacrifice in times of great adversity – qualities that should never be forgotten or taken for granted.
