In this evocative photograph, taken at Old Trafford on October 22,2006, football legend Tom Finney is seen embracing Manchester United greats Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes during a halftime break in the FA Barclays Premiership match between Manchester United and Liverpool. Finney, a former player for Preston North End, is fondly remembered as one of the greatest players in the history of English football. Born in Preston in 1922, Finney spent his entire professional career with his hometown club, making his debut in 1946 and going on to make a record-breaking 560 appearances for Preston North End. He was known for his skill, creativity, and versatility, able to play in various positions across the midfield and attack. Finney's performances earned him 76 caps for the England national team, and he represented his country in three World Cups. Despite his legendary status at Preston North End, Finney's dream of playing for Manchester United went unrealized during his playing career. However, in October 2006, he was invited to Old Trafford as a special guest of the club to mark the 50th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster, which claimed the lives of eight Manchester United players and several other club officials. As Manchester United took on Liverpool that day, Finney was honored with a standing ovation from the Old Trafford crowd, and he was presented with a Manchester United jersey with the number 999 on the back, symbolizing the lives lost in the Munich Air Disaster. During the halftime break, Finney shared a heartfelt moment with Giggs and Scholes, two of Manchester United's most iconic players, as they paid tribute to the legacy of this Preston North End legend.
