EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Major Gills car parked by the church lychgate in Kilkhampton, Cornwall, around 1925. The picturesque setting of Kilkhampton Church, adorned with monuments dedicated to the esteemed Grenville family, adds a touch of historic charm to this scene. Major Arthur William Gill was not only an amateur photographer but also a proud Cornishman who gained recognition for his presentations on stills and cine film during the 1920s and 1930s. His lectures were eagerly attended by various groups including The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society, and the London Cornish Society. What sets Major Gill's work apart is his unique artistic approach. He took these remarkable quarter plate slides using an ordinary camera but transformed them into vibrant color images through his own hand-painted techniques. This personal touch added depth and allure to his photographs. In this particular image, we see Major Gill's car parked alongside a traditional horse-drawn cart—a testament to the era's transportation methods in rural Cornwall. It is important to note that this photograph is not associated with any commercial use or company. The Royal Cornwall Museum proudly preserves this glass lantern slide as part of its collection showcasing "Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots". It serves as a visual time capsule capturing both the beauty of Kilkhampton Church and Major Gill's passion for photography and storytelling.
