Bronze Age Feast

Coloured engraving of a Bronze Age feast. Ingredients could have included game, meat from domesticated animals, birds, fish, cereals such as wheat barley and oats, fruit, legumes and other vegetables. Agriculture and a settled way of life started earlier in Neolithic times and had become well established by the Bronze Age. Animals such as cattle, pigs, goats and sheep were kept to supply meat and milk. Cereals were cultivated and the ears ground into flour and baked as round unleavened loaves. Fruit and vegetables were consumed fresh and dried and stored, where possible. Beer, mead and wine were produced, depending on the local climate. Dogs may have been domesticated as early as 30, 000 BC and certainly by 7, 000 BC. By the Bronze Age ( circa 3000 -1000 BC) the partnership between humans and dogs was well established.Pottery and the first metal blades were in use

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Bronze Age Feast" showcases a vibrant and lively scene from ancient times. The coloured engraving beautifully depicts the abundance of ingredients that would have been enjoyed during this era. From game to meat from domesticated animals, birds to fish, cereals like wheat, barley, and oats, fruit to legumes and other vegetables - this feast truly represents the diverse diet of Bronze Age communities. Agriculture played a vital role in their settled way of life, which had its roots in Neolithic times but flourished during the Bronze Age. Animals such as cattle, pigs, goats, and sheep were kept for their meat and milk supply. Cereals were cultivated and ground into flour for baking round unleavened loaves. Fresh fruits and vegetables were consumed while dried ones were stored for later use. The local climate determined the production of beverages like beer, mead or wine. This snapshot also highlights an interesting historical fact: dogs had already been domesticated by this time period (circa 3000-1000 BC), showcasing the long-established partnership between humans and canines. Pottery was widely used during these times along with the advent of metal blades made from bronze – marking significant advancements in technology. Through this mesmerizing image captured by Science Photo Library's lens, we are transported back thousands of years to witness not only a sumptuous feast but also glimpse into humanity's progress in agriculture and culinary practices during one of history's most fascinating periods - the Bronze Age.
