HERA accelerator ring, DESY
HERA accelerator ring. View of part of the HERA accelerator at DESY (Deutsche Elektronen Synchro- tron), Hamburg, Germany. HERA (Hadron Electron Ring Accelerator) consists of a pair of accelerator rings mounted in a 6.3km circumference tunnel. The upper (cream-coloured) ring carries protons, whilst the lower (pink) ring carries electrons in the other direction. At two points on the ring the beams cross providing proton/electron collisions at an energy of 850 GeV. Two large detectors (H1 and ZEUS) will then study these collisions. Data from these detectors will provide information about the quarks inside protons and the gluon force moderators that bind them

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a view of the HERA accelerator ring at DESY, located in Hamburg, Germany. The HERA (Hadron Electron Ring Accelerator) is an extraordinary scientific marvel consisting of two accelerator rings encased within a 6.3km circumference tunnel. In this image, we can observe the upper ring adorned in cream color carrying protons while the lower ring, painted pink, carries electrons in the opposite direction. At specific points along these rings, proton/electron collisions occur with an astounding energy level of 850 GeV. These collisions are meticulously studied by two large detectors named H1 and ZEUS to unravel invaluable information about quarks residing inside protons and the influential gluon force moderators that bind them together. The significance of this research cannot be overstated as it delves into understanding fundamental particles and their interactions on a subatomic scale. As scientists explore these particle physics phenomena at DESY's HERA accelerator facility, they unlock secrets that contribute to our knowledge of nuclear research and advance our comprehension of the universe's building blocks. This awe-inspiring photograph from Science Photo Library encapsulates both the grandeur and complexity involved in pushing boundaries within particle physics laboratories like DESY. It serves as a testament to human curiosity and determination to unveil nature's deepest mysteries through cutting-edge technology such as accelerators like HERA.
