EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a bustling Hong Kong street scene in the 1890s, during its time as a British colony. The image showcases a vibrant and diverse urban environment filled with pedestrians, carts, rickshaws, and an array of signs written in both Chinese script and English. The hill street setting adds an intriguing element to the composition. Taken by renowned US explorer and survey photographer William Henry Jackson, this lantern slide was obtained for the World Transportation Commission's worldwide survey on behalf of the Field Columbian Museum in Chicago. Hand-colored with dyes and paints, this particular print retains its original black-and-white format on the far right and left sides. The photograph offers a glimpse into history as it portrays individuals from different walks of life engaging in various activities such as trading, walking, pushing carts, or simply going about their daily routines. From shopkeepers to laborers to policemen, people from all backgrounds can be seen navigating through this busy commercial area. As we admire this remarkable piece captured over a century ago by Jackson's lens, it serves as a testament to Hong Kong's rich cultural heritage while also highlighting its significant role within the British Empire during that era. This historical gem is not only visually stunning but also provides valuable insights into the city's past dynamics and societal fabric.
