Mutant insulin, molecular model
Mutant insulin, molecular model. Several of the building blocks (residues) have been swapped with those from a similar molecule, insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I). The complex metabolism of IGF and insulin can be studied by examining the properties of mutant forms. Insulin consists of two peptide chains, A and B, which are linked by disulphide bridges. It plays an important role in blood sugar regulation. Insufficient production of insulin leads to glucose accumulation in the blood causing diabetes
