Russian Buran space shuttle on launchpad
Buran space shuttle. The Russian re-useable space shuttle seen on its launch pad. The winged Buran shuttle is seen mated to its Energia launch vehicle. Buran made its one and only space flight on 15 November 1988. Launched from Baikonur in Kazakhstan, it made two orbits before re-entering and landing on the Baikonur runway just 206 minutes later. The flight was fully automated as it was unmanned. After the break-up of the Soviet Union, the Buran programme was cancelled. In 2002 the sole Buran space shuttle was destroyed when the hangar enclosing it collapsed due to lack of maintenance

Baikonur Booster Buran Cancelled Craft Energia Flight Kazakhstan Launch Launcher Russia Russian Shuttle Soviet Test Unmanned Vertical
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Russian Buran space shuttle on its launchpad, a remarkable sight that symbolizes the country's ambitious foray into space exploration. The winged Buran shuttle is elegantly mated to its Energia launch vehicle, exuding an air of power and technological prowess. It serves as a poignant reminder of the historic moment when Buran embarked on its one and only space flight on 15 November 1988. Launched from Baikonur in Kazakhstan, this groundbreaking mission saw the unmanned Buran make two orbits before gracefully re-entering Earth's atmosphere and landing flawlessly on the Baikonur runway just 206 minutes later. What makes this feat even more impressive is that the entire flight was fully automated, showcasing Russia's advanced capabilities in space technology. However, despite this triumph, destiny had other plans for Buran. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, funding constraints led to the cancellation of further missions under the program. Tragically, in 2002, fate dealt another blow when a hangar collapse due to lack of maintenance resulted in destruction of the sole remaining Buran space shuttle. Nevertheless, this iconic image immortalizes a significant chapter in Russia's aerospace history—a testament to their pioneering spirit and unwavering dedication towards pushing boundaries beyond our planet's confines.
