Helix nebula, planetary nebula
Helix nebula (NGC 7293), optical image. This is a planetary nebula, a series of shells of gas cast off from a Sun-like star towards the end of its life. The outer layers of the star expand as the core contracts, and they are cast off into space as the core becomes unstable and pulsates. This exposes the very hot core, which emits radiation that ionises the shells of gas and makes them glow. After this phase, the core cools and no longer emits the radiation needed to ionise the gas. At this point, the star becomes a white dwarf. The Helix nebula lies around 650 light years from Earth in the constellation Aquarius

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Helix nebula, also known as NGC 7293. Located approximately 650 light years away from Earth in the constellation Aquarius, this planetary nebula is a stunning example of stellar evolution. Formed from the remnants of a Sun-like star nearing the end of its life, the Helix nebula consists of a series of gas shells expelled by the expanding outer layers of the dying star. As its core contracts and becomes unstable, these shells are cast off into space. The intense radiation emitted by the hot core ionizes these gas shells, causing them to emit a mesmerizing glow. However, as time goes on and the core cools down, it no longer emits sufficient radiation to ionize the surrounding gas. This marks a crucial turning point for this celestial object - it transitions into what is known as a white dwarf. The intricate details captured in this optical image provide astronomers with valuable insights into astrophysics and our understanding of stellar evolution. It serves as a reminder that even in death, stars can leave behind breathtaking remnants that continue to inspire awe and curiosity within us all.
