EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the early 20th century, capturing the essence of the Ukivok stilt village on King Island, Alaska. The settlement, home to approximately 200 Inupiat people known as the Ukivokmiut or "people of the sea" was a thriving community engaged in subsistence hunting and fishing. Perched on stilts against a breathtaking coastal backdrop, this historical village tells a story of resilience and adaptability. The image showcases traditional buildings nestled along the cliff's edge, providing shelter for its inhabitants. These huts stand tall on their wooden supports, defying gravity while offering protection from harsh Arctic elements. The photograph is a testament to human geography and anthropology as it captures not only a physical location but also reflects upon the cultural heritage of these indigenous Alaskan people. It serves as a reminder of their deep connection with nature and their ability to thrive in such challenging environments. Sadly, by 1970, this once vibrant stilt village had been abandoned. However, through photographs like this one from Lomen Brothers Studio dating between 1900 and 1927 preserved by Library of Congress/Science Photo Library, we can still appreciate and learn from the rich history that unfolded within those wooden walls. This monochrome snapshot transports us back in time to witness an important chapter in North American history - one that celebrates both human ingenuity and our intricate relationship with our surroundings.
