Wistmans Wood, Dartmoor
Light rain falling in Wistmans Wood, Dartmoor. This wood is one of three surviving remnants of ancient woodland in Dartmoor. Because of its high-altitude, the trees in the wood have stunted, gnarled growth. The dominant tree species is pedunculate oak (Quercus robur). The floor of the wood is littered with granite boulders, which support the growth of mosses, lichens and liverworts. These boulders, known as clitter, are the product of periglacial weathering during previous Ice Ages. The wood is a National Nature Reserve (NNR) and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)
