Coba Dr Gann Maya Mayan Twenties Nineteen Twenties

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases one of the most awe-inspiring Stelae at Copan. The ruler, depicted in intricate detail, is facing the North while being skillfully painted by Mr Joseph Linden Smith, an esteemed archaeological artist. Standing alongside are Thomas Gann and Dr Sylvanus Morley from the prestigious Carnegie Institution of Washington, who contribute their expertise to this remarkable project. To the left of the ruler, we can observe a series of numbers: 9,16,10,0,0. These digits represent the year 501 AD and serve as a testament to the rich history engraved on this ancient monument. On the opposite side of the Stelae lies a Great Cycle glyph—a symbol marking an astonishing span of time: 8,000 years. Captured during the vibrant era between wars in the early twentieth century (1926), this monochrome image evokes a sense of nostalgia for that iconic period known as "the twenties". Its timeless appeal transports us back to a world where exploration and discovery were paramount. Preserved by TopFoto. co. uk's exceptional archival collection Europeana Photography (not affiliated with any commercial use), this photograph offers us a glimpse into both ancient Mayan civilization and early twentieth-century archaeological endeavors. It serves as a reminder that even across vast spans of time and culture, human curiosity remains constant—an enduring force driving our quest for knowledge about our past.
