The former house, now public house, dates to the mid 16th century, and was altered and raised by 30ft in the 1970 s. It was moved c70m north to its current position, alongside Sinclairs Oyster Bar, in the mid to late 1990 s, opening again in 1999. The inn has three storeys and a three bay plan, with the end bays gabled. There is a splayed door in the left corner, and a 20th century door in the centre of the south facade. Old Wellington Inn, Manchester: A Snapshot of History and Resilience This evocative photograph captures the Old Wellington Inn, a historic gem nestled in the heart of Manchester's Old Shambles area. Dating back to the mid-16th century, this former house has stood the test of time, bearing witness to the city's rich history. The Old Wellington Inn, with its three-storey, three-bay plan and gabled end bays, once boasted a traditional Tudor timber-framed facade. However, in the 1970s, the inn was altered and raised by an impressive 30ft. In the mid to late 1990s, it was moved approximately 70m north to its current location, alongside Sinclair's Oyster Bar, where it reopened in 1999. The image showcases the inn in its original setting on Old Shambles, a charming and historic street. However, this tranquil scene was disrupted in 1996 when an IRA bombing forced the relocation of the inn. Despite the challenges, the Old Wellington Inn continues to stand as a testament to Manchester's resilience and its commitment to preserving its historical heritage. George Bernard Wood, through his lens, captures the essence of this remarkable building, offering a glimpse into Manchester's past and its ongoing efforts to preserve its rich history for future generations.
