Signs of the Zodiac in Early Color by John Bevis ÔÇô Cancer ÔÇô June 21 ÔÇô July 22
This colorfully illustrated Star Chart for Cancer has been completely art-worked from the Cancer plate featured on John Beviss Star Charts of the signs of the Zodiac by John Bevis c1747-1749.
These extremely detailed charts were compiled by Bevis, an eighteenth century physician-turned astronomer, whose other claim to fame is as the discoverer of the Crab Nebula,
John Bevis (November 10, 1695 - November 6, 1771) and the Uranographia
Historians of astronomy name four great celestial atlases: Bayer s, Hevelius s, Flamsteed s, and Bode s. To this, they add one great work that could have been: Beviss Uranographia.
John Bevis was an Oxford trained physician and amateur astronomer, Bevis set up a private observatory in North London in 1738, where he made observations, which led to his attempt to create the second British Celestial Atlas. In the mid 18th Century, Bevis produced his Uranographia Britannica, which was the first major celestial atlas published after the posthumous publication of the Atlas of John Flamsteed, Englands first Royal Astronomer.
Careful cross-referencing of the dedications on each work allows the date for the creation of the plates to be constrained to between 1747-1749. By comparing the titles suggested in the work to Royal Society and clergy records, upper and lower bounds of the date of creation can be made.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate and vibrant Star Chart for Cancer, part of John Bevis' renowned series on the Signs of the Zodiac. Created between 1747-1749, this colorfully illustrated chart has been meticulously art-worked from Bevis' original plate dedicated to Cancer, which falls between June 21 and July 22. John Bevis was a remarkable figure in both astronomy and medicine during the eighteenth century. Not only did he compile these incredibly detailed charts, but he also made significant astronomical discoveries such as identifying the Crab Nebula. His contributions to celestial mapping were so significant that historians consider his work, Uranographia Britannica, as one of five great celestial atlases alongside Bayer's, Hevelius', Flamsteed's, and Bode's. Trained at Oxford University as a physician, Bevis established his private observatory in North London in 1738. It was here that he conducted observations leading him to create his ambitious Celestial Atlas. Published after John Flamsteed's posthumous atlas release, Uranographia Britannica became an essential reference for astronomers. The dedication found on each work allows us to confidently date these plates within the period of 1747-1749. By comparing titles mentioned in records from institutions like the Royal Society and clergy archives, we can further refine our understanding of their creation. This stunning print is a testament to John Bevis' passion for both science and artistry—a harmonious blend captured within this exquisite depiction of Cancer among the signs of the Zodiac.
