Pteranodon catching fish, artwork
Pteranodon catching fish, artwork. Pteranodon was a flying reptile (pterosaur) that inhabited what is now North America and Europe during the late Cretaceous period, between 85 and 75 million years ago. It was carnivorous, and probably fed on fish (one at lower right), which it caught from the water in its toothless bill. Its wingspan could reach up to ten metres. A distinctive feature was its cranial crest. As shown here in bright colours, this may have been primarily a mating or recognition display structure. In the background is an eroded sea arch and sea stacks

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant artwork captures the awe-inspiring moment of a Pteranodon, a flying reptile from the late Cretaceous period, swooping down to catch its prey. With its massive wingspan stretching up to ten meters, this ancient creature ruled the skies over what is now North America and Europe around 85 to 75 million years ago. The Pteranodon's toothless bill was perfectly adapted for snatching fish out of the water, as depicted by one unfortunate victim in the lower right corner. One striking feature of this magnificent creature was its cranial crest, which is showcased here in vivid colors. While scientists believe that it may have served primarily as a display structure for mating or recognition purposes, it certainly adds an extra touch of grandeur to this already breathtaking scene. In the background, we see an eroded sea arch and sea stacks, reminding us of the ever-changing forces of nature that shape our world. This artwork not only highlights the beauty and diversity found in our natural history but also serves as a testament to the incredible creatures that once roamed our planet millions of years ago. With meticulous attention to detail and stunning use of color, this illustration from Science Photo Library brings these prehistoric wonders back to life before our eyes. It invites us into a world where winged predators ruled both land and sky while captivating our imagination with their extraordinary existence.
