Chysauster, New Mill, Penzance, Cornwall. 1920s
Three men sitting on stones at the site of the ancient village of Chysauster, New Mill, Penzance. One of the gentleman is sporting a checked knickerbocker suit. Chysauster Ancient Village is a late Iron Age and Romano-British settlement of courtyard houses which is currently in the care of English Heritage. The village included eight to ten houses, each with its own internal courtyard. To the south east of the village is the remains of a fogou, an underground structure of uncertain function. The man on the right bears a resemblance to the Antiquarian Thomas Francis George Dexter (c. 1860-1933). Photographer: Unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from the 1920s, three men are seen sitting on stones at the historic site of Chysauster, New Mill in Penzance, Cornwall. The ancient village of Chysauster is a remarkable late Iron Age and Romano-British settlement consisting of courtyard houses. Maintained by English Heritage today, it offers a glimpse into the rich history of this region. The gentlemen in the photograph exude an air of curiosity and admiration for their surroundings. One particularly stands out with his fashionable checked knickerbocker suit, showcasing his individuality even amidst such ancient ruins. It is impossible not to wonder about his story and what brought him to this extraordinary place. Chysauster Ancient Village comprised eight to ten houses, each possessing its own internal courtyard. Adding further intrigue to the location is an underground structure called a fogou, whose purpose remains uncertain but adds an aura of mystery to the site. A striking resemblance can be observed between one man on the right and Thomas Francis George Dexter (c. 1860-1933), a notable Antiquarian during that era. Although we cannot confirm their identity without certainty due to unknown photographer information, it sparks our imagination as we contemplate their connection to these historical grounds. This mesmerizing snapshot captures both the beauty and significance of Chysauster Ancient Village while leaving us with lingering questions about those who once walked these very paths centuries ago.
