EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Prospect Cottage in Rottingdean, East Sussex, a charming residence once owned by the renowned Pre-Raphaelite artist Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898). The cottage, located on the left side of the image, was just one of two properties Burne-Jones acquired in 1889. The lower central building in the shot was also part of his estate, which he subsequently joined to Prospect Cottage, creating North End House. Sir Edward Burne-Jones was a prominent figure in the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, an influential art movement that emerged in the 1870s. Known for his innovative designs and ethereal, dreamlike imagery, Burne-Jones left a lasting impact on the art world. Burne-Jones' connection to Prospect Cottage began in the late 19th century, and it served as a cherished retreat for the artist. His studio was situated in the part of the combined property, behind the row of windows on the first floor, where he could immerse himself in his creative pursuits. This photograph, taken circa 1910, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when one of the most influential artists of the Pre-Raphaelite movement called Prospect Cottage his home. The image invites us to imagine Burne-Jones at work, surrounded by the picturesque beauty of Rottingdean and the inspiration it provided him.
