EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Portico of the sandstone Temple of Edfu, dedicated to the falcon-headed god Horus in Egypt. Created by Scottish artist David Roberts and lithographed by Louis Haghe in 1838, this artwork offers a glimpse into ancient Egyptian architecture and religious beliefs. The temple itself was constructed during the Ptolemaic period between 237 and 57 BC, making it an archaeological marvel from over two thousand years ago. The intricate details of the portico's pillars and columns are beautifully captured in this lithograph, highlighting both the skill of its creators and the grandeur of ancient Egyptian design. Roberts traveled extensively throughout Egypt and the Holy Land, documenting his journeys through sketches that were later transformed into lithographs like this one. These prints became immensely popular at the time, allowing people all around to experience these awe-inspiring sites without leaving their homes. In this particular image, we see individuals standing near the ruins of Edfu Temple, adding a sense of scale to its immense size. The presence of worshippers paying homage to Horus further emphasizes its religious significance. Through this photo print, we are transported back to 19th-century Egypt - a land rich with history and architectural wonders. It serves as a testament to human creativity and devotion across centuries while also reminding us of our enduring fascination with ancient civilizations.
