EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph showcases the Canadian Eskimo Dog, also known as the Qimmiq or Canis familiaris borealis. The Canadian Eskimo Dog is a traditional breed native to the Arctic regions of Canada and Greenland. Historically, these dogs were an essential companion to the Inuit people, helping them hunt, pull sleds, and serve as watchdogs. The Canadian Eskimo Dog is a sturdy and agile breed, well-adapted to the harsh Arctic climate. They have a thick double coat, which provides insulation in extreme temperatures. Their piercing blue eyes and distinctive facial markings add to their striking appearance. Unfortunately, the Canadian Eskimo Dog is now an endangered breed. Their numbers have significantly decreased due to the introduction of snowmobiles and other modern forms of transportation, which have made traditional sled dogs less necessary. Additionally, interbreeding with other breeds has diluted the gene pool of the Canadian Eskimo Dog. This beautiful lithograph is from Georg Friedrich Treitschke's Gallery of Natural History, Naturhistorischer Bildersaal des Thierreiches, Liepzig, 1842. It is a rare and valuable record of this endangered breed, capturing the essence of the Canadian Eskimo Dog's unique characteristics and historical significance. The intricate handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a stunning addition to any collection of natural history or Arctic art.
