Les Trois Magots - A Glimpse into the Wild World of the Barrymore Brothers
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This photo print, titled "Les Trois Magots" takes us back to 1791 and introduces us to the notorious Barrymore brothers. Published by Hannah Humphrey, this hand-coloured etching by James Gillray offers a glimpse into the extravagant lives of Richard, Henry, and Augustus Barrymore. Known as three of the wildest rakes of their time, these brothers were infamous for their outrageous antics and lavish lifestyles. So much so that they earned themselves unforgettable nicknames - Newgate, Hellgate, and Cripplegate. The Earl of Barrymore himself was Richard (Hellgate) Barry, followed by Henry (Cripplegate) Barry who served as Lieutenant-Colonel in his lifetime. Lastly, we have Augustus (Newgate), whose reputation preceded him wherever he went. In this image captured by Gillray's skilled hand, we see a playful scene unfold before our eyes. The emaciated figures of the brothers engage in an aggressive boxing match with pugnacious determination. Their caricatured features add a touch of humor to this family affair. It is fascinating how even during leisurely moments like these games among siblings; they still exuded their larger-than-life personalities. This engraving serves as a testament to both their familial bond and their unyielding spirit. Courtesy of Fine Art Finder via Bridgeman Images, this historical gem
