EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a wooden hat stand from Maes Millinery Shop, which operated between 1941 and 1994 in downtown Philadelphia. The creator of this exquisite piece remains unknown, but its craftsmanship speaks volumes. Painted in a pristine white hue, the base of the hat stand is circular with a single groove delicately carved into its top surface. A turned wooden dowel is securely screwed into the center of the base, providing stability and elegance to the overall design. The form of the hat stand is equally impressive; it takes on a circular shape that tapers towards the bottom where it attaches to the stand via a central hole on its underside. This ingenious construction allows for easy display and storage of hats while maintaining their original shape. Mae Reeves, an African-American milliner who made waves as one of her era's pioneering figures, owned Maes Millinery Shop. Her custom-made hats were renowned for their style and quality. As an African American woman owning her own business during that time was groundbreaking itself. This photograph not only captures an object but also represents cultural heritage and black history within America. It serves as a testament to Mae Reeves' legacy as well as highlighting her significant contributions to fashion in Philadelphia's bustling cityscape. Displayed at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), this remarkable artifact stands tall among other heritage art pieces from various decades throughout United States history.
