EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Harry Brodribb Irving (1870-1919) is seen in character as the terrifying Mr. Hyde in the stage adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The son of legendary English actor Sir Henry Irving, Harry followed in his father's footsteps and made a name for himself in the world of acting and theatre management. Born in 1870, Harry Irving displayed a natural affinity for the stage from a young age. He began his career as an assistant stage manager at the Lyceum Theatre, where his father was the artistic director. Over time, Harry's talent and dedication earned him opportunities to act in various productions. In 1898, he made his debut as Hamlet at the Lyceum, a role that solidified his reputation as a formidable actor. However, it was his portrayal of the split personality of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde that truly showcased his versatility and range. The photograph captures the chilling transformation from the respectable, gentle Dr. Jekyll to the menacing, scary Mr. Hyde. Harry's performance was so convincing that audiences were left on the edge of their seats, making this production one of the most successful and memorable in the history of the Lyceum Theatre. Despite his success, Harry Irving's career was cut short by his untimely death in 1919. His legacy, however, continues to inspire and captivate audiences, as evidenced by this haunting image of his iconic performance as Mr. Hyde. This photograph is a testament to the power of theatre and the enduring impact of a truly great actor.
