Islet of Langerhans, light micrograph
Islet of Langerhans. Light micrograph of a section through an islet of Langerhans (centre) in the pancreas. This structure is composed of clumps of secretory cells. The main secretions from these cells are the hormones glucagon and insulin, which control blood sugar. The cells surrounding the islet form sac-like structures called acini, and secrete digestive enzymes. This micrograph was coloured after the sample was prepared with a haematoxylin eosin stain. Magnification: x400 when printed at 10 centimetres across
