Building Entrance Gates Twenties Thomas Coram

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - the signing of a contract for the sale of the Foundling Hospital and its vast estate in Bloomsbury. The image showcases the grand entrance gates, standing as a symbol of hope and compassion that have welcomed countless children over the years. In 1925, after more than two centuries of providing shelter and care to abandoned children, this iconic institution was preparing to bid farewell to its beloved home. Foundling Estates Ltd, led by Sir Arthur Du Cros as Chairman, had acquired this historic property spanning an impressive 56 acres for an astounding sum of £1,650,000. It is worth noting that back in 1741 when Lord Salisbury sold it to the hospital's governors for a mere £6,500, no one could have foreseen such a remarkable transaction taking place. As we gaze upon this photograph taken on August 22nd in the vibrant twenties era, we cannot help but feel both nostalgia and curiosity about what lies ahead for these cherished grounds. The Governors plan to construct a new haven for their young charges amidst serene countryside surroundings while they prepare to hand over possession within two years. This extraordinary event marks not only a change in ownership but also represents one of Central London's most substantial transfers of land ever witnessed. Let us celebrate this pivotal moment captured through General's lens - where past meets present and progress intertwines with tradition.
